The best time to start learning about college golf recruiting is 7th or 8th grade. Beginning early gives families the opportunity to understand the process, build a long-term plan, make smarter tournament decisions, and avoid common recruiting mistakes.
Here's our recommended timeline:
7th–8th Grade: Best-case scenario. Begin learning the recruiting process, developing good habits, and creating a long-term plan.
9th Grade: An ideal time to start competing in the right tournaments, building your résumé, and preparing for future communication with college coaches.
10th Grade: Still an excellent time to begin. There is plenty of opportunity to build a strong recruiting profile and position yourself for success.
11th & 12th Grade: Don't panic—we can absolutely help. While some opportunities may have passed, there are still many college golf options available, and we can help you identify the best path forward.
No matter what grade you're in, our goal is to help you maximize your opportunities and make informed recruiting decisions.
The P3 Masterclass is designed for both boys and girls pursuing college golf opportunities. While the recruiting process is similar, there are important differences between men's and women's recruiting. We cover strategies specific to both so every family receives relevant guidance.
No. You do not need to be nationally ranked to play college golf.
That said, there are currently more than 12,000 ranked junior boys and over 4,500 ranked junior girls, so there's a good chance you can earn a ranking by competing in nationally recognized events.
However, rankings alone do not determine whether you'll be recruited.
College coaches evaluate much more than scores and rankings. They look at the complete picture, including:
- Character and coachabilityWork ethic and attitude
- Academic performance
- Tournament schedule and level of competition
- Scoring consistency and improvement over time
- Communication skillsCompetitive mindset
- Long-term development potential
- How well a player fits their team's culture
A ranking may help coaches discover you, but it doesn't earn you a roster spot. The players who separate themselves are those who demonstrate strong character, consistently improve, communicate effectively, and show they are a great fit both on and off the golf course.
At P3, we help families understand what college coaches are truly looking for—not just where a player is ranked.
